The Ionion Center is honored to invite you in its amphitheater next Sunday, March 12th 2024, at 13.30 pm for the presentation of the researcher Jo DowlingSoka under the title «Writing a New Red Sea: Georgios Pisides and Theodoros Synkellos’s Memorialisations of the Konstantinoupolis in Siege in 626 CE».
Tο Ιόνιο Κέντρο λαμβάνει την τιμή να σας προσκαλέσει στο χώρο του την Κυριακή 12 Μαρτίου 2024 και ώρα 13.30 μ.μ για την παρουσίαση της ιστορικού -ερευνήτριας Jo DowlingSoka με τίτλο : «Καταγραφή μιας Νέας Κόκκινης Θάλασσας: Γεώργιος Πισίδης και Θεόδωρος Σύνκελλος, μνημονεύσεις από την πολιορκία της Κωνσταντινούπολης 626 μ.X. ».
Το καλοκαίρι του 626 μ.Χ., ένας μεγάλος πολυεθνικός στρατός υπό την ηγεσία του Χαγανάτου των Αβάρων επιτέθηκε στην Κωνσταντινούπολη, προσπαθώντας να την κατακτήσει. Στον απόηχο επιβίωσης αυτής της επίθεσης, πολλές προσωπικότητες που συνεδέοντο στενά με τον Πατριάρχη Σέργιο έγραψαν κείμενα που μνημονεύουν τη μάχη, στην οποίαν οι εικόνες και τα κειμήλια που αναφέρονται στη Θεοτόκο παρουσιάζονται σε μεγάλο βαθμό. Αυτά τα κείμενα του Γεωργίου Πισίδη και του Θεόδωρου Σύνκελλου καταγράφουν ότι η Θεοτόκος επενέβη ενεργά και συμμετείχε στη μάχη λόγω των προσευχών του Σεργίου και της παρουσίασης μιας Αχειροποίητης Εικόνας στις επάλξεις, σε μια πράξη όμοια με του Μωυσή.
Αυτή η πολιορκία και οι μνημονεύσεις της είναι το θέμα της Ph.D, διατριβής της Jo DowlingSoka, Ph.D. υποψήφιας στο Πανεπιστήμιο Macquarie του Σύδνεϋ της Αυστραλίας.
Η Jo DowlingSoka σε μια ωριαία ομιλία εξετάζει τις λεπτομέρειες τόσο της πολεμικής δραστηριότητας κατά την πολιορκία όσο και της επακόλουθης ιστορικής μνημόνευσής της.
Title: Writing a New Red Sea: Georgios Pisides and Theodoros Synkellos’s Memorialisations of the Siege of Konstantinoupolis in 626 CE.
Description: In the summer of 626 CE, a large multi-ethnic army led by the Avar Khaganate attacked the city of Konstantinoupolis for ten days, attempting to conquer it. In the aftermath of surviving this attack, several figures closely associated with the Patriarches Sergios wrote texts memorialising the battle in which icons and relics associated with the Theotokos feature heavily. These texts by Georgios Pisides and Theodoros Synkellos record that the Theotokos actively intervened and took part in the battle because of Sergios’s prayers and his presentation of an Achieropoeitos icon on the walls in a Moses-like act.
This siege and memorialisation is the subject of the Ph.D. Thesis of Jo DowlingSoka, a Ph.D. Candidate at Macquarie University. She offers an hour-long talk examining the details of both the battle and its subsequent memorialisation.”
