WAS CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS A BYZANTINE PALEOLOGOS PRINCE?

Cristopher Columbus’ grandfather was the ship owner Juan Colom Sacoma. His origin was from Giroma, Catalonia. His family moved to Barcelona in 1320, then to Ibiza in 1340 or 1380, then to Majorca in 1420. His wife’s name was Mona. They had three children Juan or Jaimi and Bartholomew who moved to Paris and Margarita who moved to Chios where she was intermarried to a member of the Byzantine, Senatorial, Royal and Imperial House of Disypatos Paleologos.

Initially Cristopher Columbus’ official full name was Juan, Disypatos Paleologos, but later on, in 1453 (year of the Fall of Constantinople), he added the name Christopher, also adopting his mother’s surname variation Colombus (perhaps for safety reasons).

It is remarkable that:

a) Christofer Columbus’ notes on the margins of his personal books were written by him exclusively in Greek and not in any other language.

b) Christopher Columbus’ relative and mentor, Captain, pirate and French Admiral Georgios Disypatos Paleologos Columbus, also born in Chios island, Greece, used to sign as “the Greek”, just like the prominent Greek painter El Greco aka Domenicus Theotocopoulos, born in Crete island, Greece and later on settled in Toledo, Spain, who also used to.

c) Christopher Columbus used to write the word Chios in the Greek way “Xios”.

d) Christopher Columbus also used a half Greek and half Latin monogram, typical Byzantine one, formed according to the original, genuine medieval Byzantine Etiquette while he was signing as “Xos Ferens” meaning Christoforus (Christofer).

e) A Greek postage stamp was published in 1992 showing Christopher Columbus and an engraving of Chios island, Greece, thus officially and stately confirming his Greek origin.

Many of the above mentioned evidences had been announced during the fourth international scientific congress about the history and the culture of Chios island, held in June of 1991.
